In order to better meet the demand of our customers, Julien LEGHAIT, PhD in Toxicology, attended the workshop on “Benchmark Dose (BMD) Modeling Analysis” organised by US-EPA during the congress of the Society for Risk Assessment in Charleston, South Carolina.
The BMD approach aims to add consistency and objectivity to the derivation of safe exposure levels during risk assessment, as an alternative to the more limited NOAEL/LOAEL approach.
The BMD is defined as an estimate of the dose that produces a predetermined change in response rate of an adverse effect. This predetermined change is called the benchmark response or BMR. The advantages of the BMD approach include not being limited to the doses tested experimentally. In addition, it takes into account the shape of the dose-response curve more explicitly and it appropriately reflects uncertainty in study design. Also, BMD values causing the same BMR can be compared between studies and chemicals.

As part of its drive to improve REACH and to implement the 3Rs as much as possible, ECHA wishes to investigate the use of the new test guidelines, OECD 443 and OECD 488. The first is for the extended one-generation reproductive and developmental toxicity test, which is proposed as an alternative to the OECD 416 2-generation study and may use fewer animals. The second is the transgenic rodent mutagenicity assay that should provide more relevant data in the follow-up of in vitro positive mutagenicity results, particularly in the investigation of site of contact effects. CEHTRA’s role is to investigate the costs and capacity of contract laboratories for these two study types and to identify technical issues that may impact on their use within REACH.

CEHTRA scientists were rejoicing today as the French Agency for Research (ANR) selected Project DALMATIEN among 11 out of 52 research projects. CEHTRA is involved in DALMATIEN, and partners with world-class R&D teams of the French Petroleum Institute (IFP), Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles (ESPCI-ParisTech), and Université Pierre & Marie Curie (UPMC) in Paris.
The project will not only be addressing CO2 capture, a topic of a high environmental relevance, but also an evaluation of the environmental acceptability of degradation products amines form with flue gas components, when used in carbon dioxide gas-liquid transfer.

CEHTRA is actively participating on the CHESAR Consultation Group from ECHA. CHESAR is designed to help companies carry out their Chemical Safety Assessments (CSA) and preparing their Chemical Safety Reports (CSR). The purpose of the Consultation Group is to validate the technical proposal in the development of future versions of CHESAR. The first CHESAR Consultation Group meeting took place the 21th September (CEFIC, Brussels) and a new version is expected to come out in early 2012.
